About school fees
I think I am uniquely qualified to answer due to my background.
Back when I was in school (middle school and high school), I went from a local public school, a very matter of fact facility to a private school for girls.

No, it was not a religious school - it was a school concentrating on humanities, and similarly our town had another school for boys (concentrating on sciences and other exact studies).
The transition was a shock.
An environment I knew for about 5 years was yanked away from me, my friends were gone (and same socio-economic mix was gone as well), and I was transplanted into the school where donations from parents were counted in thousands (on top of regular fees), school uniforms were mandatory and the building was about 100 years old.
A typical Ivy League-type prep school.

Immediately the workload increased by several times, I was barely keeping up with the never-ending assignments.
Teachers were demanding of respect and a person could have been kicked out for looking at the teacher in a wrong way.
I am serious.

Fellow students were regularly vacationing in all kinds of exotic places, wore the latest fashions, and the graduation ceremony took place on a private yacht (belonging to one of the parents). There was no expense spared for anything: chemistry lab was outfitted, so that each student had their own mini-lab desk with all the safety precautions and even running water (separate individual spout).
Geography lessons were supplemented by the souvenirs (enough for the whole class) that kids brought from their travels.
Physical education was taking place at a local stadium (which parents were renting out, three times a week). Don't ask.
Now, the question was - what in the world was a girl from a middle-class family doing there?
Well, it so happens that I was deemed as special due to my ability to learn languages and it was either this school (in the same town) or a boarding school (in the capital of the country). My parents went with the lesser of two evils.
